After landing my new job, we were all in the mood to celebrate a little bit (plus we needed to go get groceries)! So, we took a trip up to Cody for groceries and while we were shopping, we decided to get something to eat and head out to the reservoir (meaning Buffalo Bill Reservoir) to have a picnic by the lake. Since we were driving past it anyway, we decided it would be fun to go check out the dam. The kids had never seen it and I hadn't been there for a really long time.
They were all a little nervous (except for Blaze) to walk across the little bridge (at the very top) that goes right across the dam, with the Reservoir on one side and the straight down drop on the other side, with only a 4 foot metal tube fence separating us from the river hundreds of feet below! On the day that we went, both the reservoir and the river were so full, and the dam was open, so there were thousands of gallons of water spilling into the river every second! It really was so amazing to watch all of that water blasting into the river, which in turn created such a strong wind blowing straight up out of the canyon (see Sierra's hair)! After the watching the water spilling out for a few minutes, we visited the little visitor's center they have there, which we did very quickly as we were getting hungry, but the kids enjoyed the view and they also have some "preserved" animals inside, like a coyote, rainbow trout, and a mule deer (just to name a few), which the boys really enjoyed. They also have a really neat movie that they show about the building of the dam, but we didn't have time to stay for that, so we'll save that for another time.
So we headed out to find a nice lunch spot, and we parked next to the lake at a little spot with a nice picnic table with a little cover over the top and ate our lunch. There was a nice breeze blowing in off the lake, which made Sierra, Jett, and Kolt "really cold" and they had to get their jackets out of the truck! What am I going to do with these little "California Kids" when it really starts to get cold out!
