Pinewood Derby

Last Tuesday night was our "Tri-Ward" (Powell 1st, 2nd, and 3rd wards) Cub Scouts Pinewood Derby. It was a lot of fun and our Cub leaders put so much work into it! The gym was all decked out with racing flags and Nascar banners, and the entrance had racing tires holding the doors open. The racers got their pictures taken as we walked in and they each got a "Pit Pass" with their picture on it (see it hanging around Jett's neck). It was a great atmosphere for racing. There were also hot dogs and nachos, "snack bar" style and Kolt kept asking me for money so he could go to the snack bar and get a hot dog! We had to keep explaining to him that they were free...he could just go and get one!

We had a great electronic track, and they had everything computerized and the match ups and winners projected (Power Point style) on a big screen at the end of the gym.

(After the races were over, we could do our own races...here is Mike (just about to break that flag off) racing Jett's and Blaze's cars against each other...Jett's car won!)

This year was Jett's first year of "making" a Pinewood Derby car after watching Mike and Blaze make cars the past couple of years. All in all, he mastered choosing the car style and choosing a great color (camaro/racecar style with a beautiful burgandy paint job!!), and could be found watching cartoons or sleeping during the rest of the car making process! This was also Blaze's last year as a Cub Scout, and he was much more into creating and actually working on his car. He chose a sleek wedge shape and painted it a shimmery, dark green.

Both cars did quite well in the races and it was a good thing for the electronic track because the two races Blaze won were sooo close. Blaze ended up taking 2nd Place in his division (Webelos), and Jett took 1st Place in his division (Wolves) and 3rd Place overall! He was so excited! It turned out to be a pretty fun night except for one little "incident," in which Jett sprained his ankle falling down the steps of the stage while we were waiting for things to get started! I, of course, being irritated that he was goofing off in the first place, shrugged it off and told him basically to get over it...then, we got home and...wow, did he have a purple, hot, swollen ankle! (picture below is 1 week later, showing all the purplish/green healing up colors) The urgent care doctor was pretty sure it was just a bad sprain, so we did our best to keep his activity to a minimum, which as we all who know Jett know is NOT an easy task! He had to miss recess, PE, and wrestling for a week, which he was not very happy about, but he is feeling better now and is back to wrestling with not too much discomfort.

Also, that night, the Wolves displayed their "Knot" projects that they had been working on for a few weeks. They turned out so neat!
